A couple years ago, the family up and moved to Colorado. And not just any part of Colorado the Rocky Mountains. We found a nice house with a great yard in a small community called Evergreen, about 25 miles west of Denver in the foothills of the Rockies. To our surprise, the house came with a little bonus: A big wooden shed on the property containing an old ATV and a bunch of accessories to go along with it.

After arriving in late November, we found ourselves settled right in time for the winters first big snowstorm. And boy, did it ever come down. After three days of constant blizzard conditions and over five total feet of snow, we found ourselves trapped behind 200 yards of snow-packed driveway. The thought of attempting to shovel that huge area was overwhelming, until I recalled seeing a snow plow fitting for the old ATV in the shed. Hoping this might do the trick, I tracked out to the shed to see if I could put it together.

With a couple calls to the manufacturer of the ATV (Kawasaki), and the manufacturer of the snow plow (WARN), I was set up and ready to go. Curiously, I only made it to the edge of the garage before my teenage son was running at me with wide eyes and a never-before-seen look of interest in household chores. Amazingly, the kid begged me to shovel the driveway, a task he had always faked a cold to get out of.

In just two hours, the ATV had plowed the entire 200 yards of driveway, and my son ran in as excited as if he had just spent the time on his snowboard. For the remainder of the winter season, his eyes lit up each and every time the snow fell, and we never spent more than a couple hours snowed in. During those great hours, my wife and I would simply warm up a pot of hot cocoa and watch the amazing transformation taking place from the warmth of the house.

When spring came around and it was time to get started on my tree trimming and garden duties, I found a similar interest in these outdoor chores. I would trim the branches, and my son would load them into the ATV plow and transport them to the edge of the property. He then spent a week straight digging up dirt and proportioning areas of land for my grand gardening plans. In a fraction of the time it had taken in previous years, I had a great garden, thanks mostly to the help of my son and his new favorite toy.

In the past two years, I havent shoveled a bit of snow in the winter. For the past two summers, I havent put a bit of work into my garden. Yet I still have the best looking yard and garden on the block, and my son did it all with an old ATV and utility plow. And anytime the neighbors come to ask me how I got my son to be so helpful around the yard, I simply point at that old ATV and say Get one of those and youll see for yourself.

Adjust the size by adjusting the pixels and height from the pop-up window.

A common misconception is that Gimp lacks many more features that Photoshop has. In fact, with the exception of features that depend on patented algorithms, Gimp is 99% on par with Photoshop in capabilities. It's just that Photoshop users try Gimp, are immediately lost in the baroque interface, and leave in terror. Having the features doesn't do you much good if you can't find them! The real hanger is the user interface.

Opacity is very straight forward. This option is found in the upper-right-hand corner of the Layers palette. It ranges from 0 - 100% opacity, and is very useful when working with adjusting color, sharpness, or any other adjustment.

When I am creating web sites I use Photoshop to create the navigation for the web site and also to optimize all of the images, so that my web site will load faster. I usually create buttons for the navigation, and then create rollover effects from within Image Ready. This saves me quite a bit of time, because all of the JavaScript for the mouse over effects are done for me, which allows me to work on the more advanced coding of the pages. Even if you want to create all of the navigation and layout of your web site without Photoshop, then you should at least use Photoshop to optimize your images so that you web site loads within a reasonable amount of time.

Well resizing is just changing the pixels, while resample is using an actual algorithm to fix the picture so that is appears not blurry, fuzzy, blocked when it is changed. With resizing to enlarge a picture some of the pixels will be doubled. While with resizing, reducing an image some of the pixels will be thrown out; this why some lines of the photo just disappear.

Re-sampling on the contrary, uses algorithms to decide the new size of the pixels, during an enlargement color will be added as a result of interpolation. While reducing an image the actual pixels will be re-calculated. A good image editor will include multiple algorithms for re-sampling and resizing options.

When you are editing your images you are going to want to change the format and the size of the image altogether. There are two types of compressing images. One is the Lossy compressing style. This is more the conservative image compressor, it takes up the least space and is easily uploaded to the web or to an email program. Generally this will save in the .jpg format, one of the most commonly seen everywhere. Lossless on the other hand has the disadvantage of not being able to choose the size you want the image. However, you will be able keep a smaller image of the original version. Common to its name, lossless compressions do not lose any part of the image. The format this compression normally saves to is .png though it can save to a bmp or rle which are less common formats. In the end which one you choose is up to whether you don't care about the original image or you really care and don't want anything lost, your pic.

Having a half decent image viewer is just as important as actually changing them. Having the ability to easily access and change your images in a process that isn't complicated to you is essential. There should be some definite functions, like the viewer should easily be adapt to your needs, be able to enhance photos and be beneficial to your use. Aquiring photos and adding them to your database should be quite easy. Managing EXIF data and being able to batch process is helpful. A couple recommended viewers would be Photophilia and Zoner Photo Studio. These are both amateur accessible and function filled. Helpful functions that you could have would be the batch function, editing function, a file filter would be nice and the image size via pixels.

This is handy because you can add descriptions and make sure you get a nice looking album for people to look at. This is different from a photo view because it actually stores all the photos no matter where they are located. The program will actually go and find all your photos. This would not be recommended if you have more than 2,000 photos because if a file gets corrupted you could lose all your pictures. An online viewer would actually be useful because then after you used a batch processor you could upload them all to the site and have just as nice of an album online. In the end it is up to you whether even want an album in the first place.

Everyday many questions come in about the many processes with digital photography: Q: I had a hard drive crash. A recovery software program recovered a number of digital photos but for some reason saved them with the file extension ".PHB". Photoshop can't open this file so I can't change it. Any ideas? It would be a pity to be commissioned for a freelance photography portrait job only to have the bride traipse through mud and grime to get to the location of the shoot.

Get advice or lessons from someone knowledgeable. Get photography tips. I am not encouraging a community college course but it couldn't hurt. A group class is a good way to get different perspectives on the same subject, in this case photography. Continue to shoot photos every chance you get. The more experience you have with your cameras just means that you will get better and better, maybe even good.

You may have to forfeit your copyright and that means that your image can be used as many times as the buyer needs but you get no more money. But who cares since you are enjoying your vocation.

Shoot photos all that you can. Take your gear everywhere you go. Take it to the lake, the airport and the park. A sunrise or sunset can offer a super backdrop for an image that will be hard to beat. Just take photos all the time. Good luck.
